Vermiculite or hard-bottom concrete base under the liner. Vermiculite is industry standard; hard-bottom is more durable and prevents the small surface irregularities that telegraph through the liner on cheaper builds.
Vinyl liners need replacement every 8–12 years on average. When the time comes, replacement is a 1–2 week job and runs roughly $4,500–$8,500 for a standard residential pool depending on liner choice and any concurrent repairs. On the North Shore — Lloyd Harbor, Cold Spring Harbor, Oyster Bay, and Old Westbury — most estate clients go gunite, but vinyl is a smart choice for secondary properties or guest house pools. In the Hamptons — East Hampton, Southampton, Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor, and Westhampton Beach — high water tables affect vinyl liner installations and we engineer the wall system accordingly.

Different, not weaker. The structural strength of a vinyl pool is in the wall system and the soil around it, not in a continuous shell. Properly installed walls on properly compacted backfill produce a structurally sound pool. The wear item is the liner, which is replaceable. The walls themselves last decades.
Less than gunite. Vinyl walls come in standard radius and straight panel sizes. You can build rectangles, kidney shapes, L-shapes, freeform — but not the extreme custom shapes (true freeform with multiple curves, vanishing edges, built-in spas with spillover) that only gunite supports.
Yes. With polymer walls, salt systems are a non-issue. With steel walls, we coordinate the spec carefully — salt-rated coatings, galvanic isolation, and certain salt cell models avoided. We brief on the choice during design.
